Carrie (2013) Movie Poster The first and one of the most celebrated novels of Stephen King comes lives to the big screen once again. The 2013 Carrie promises to be much closer to the original while reflecting the time that we live in. Has this been achieved? Will the movie become a box office hit with Oscar nominations like Brian De Palma’s version from 1976? Let’s try to find out.

The movie tells the story of Carrie, played by Chloƫ Grace Moretz. She is a shy teenage girl who is bullied by the cliques at school. She lives with her religiously fanatic mother Margaret White, played by Julianne Moore. After suffering the humiliation of her life at senior prom, the girl starts using supernatural powers to wreck havoc on the small town that she lives in. The movie is directed by Kimberly Peirce with screenplay by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.

The story in the new movie version of Carrie follows the novel more closely than the 1976 version. More characters from the novel including Sue Snell (Gabriella Wilde) and Chris Hargensen (Portia Doubleday) are featured in the new movie. This certainly gives it more debt and we see a somehow fuller story. We can better understand what triggers the anger and aggression in Carrie.

The “modernization” of the story is quite good. Peirce and Sacasa have managed to touch upon the topic of teenagers using technology such as mobile phones and the social networks for bullying their peers and subjecting them to public humiliation. At the same time, they have not deviated from the original story and this is admirable.

There is naturally a lot of blood in the movie and special effects, of course, but they are artistically tasteful and do not go over the top. The horror, fear and aggression have been successfully recreated. You will certainly shiver in your seat.

The new Carrie is a modern girl in every respect so the audience can easily recognize the shy girl next door without reminiscence of the 1970’s. Even though Stephen King suggested Lindsay Lohan should play the role, Moretz does an excellent job in playing an innocent young girl who turns into a horrific vengeance-seeking monster.

Julianne Moore is great in her role as the girl’s mother. She manages to give the character a lot of depth. You can really feel the strong bond between mother and daughter and the strong emotions that they experience. The rest of the cast is fully of young actors who do a superb job as well.
