|One film critic said that 12 Years a Slave shows what movies are made for and he is not far from the truth. The epic drama tells the story of slavery in America from the viewpoint of a free man and this brings it much closer to us. So far, the movie has got mostly superlatives. It is expected to earn several Oscar nominations and be among the favorites for this year’s awards. The question that you ask yourself at this moment is whether it is really that good.
12 Years a Slave takes us bask to the 1840’s in America. It tells the story of free educated black man who is kidnapped and sold into slavery. It is actually based on the real story and memoirs of Solomon Northup, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor. He fights to save his dignity while being humiliated by the ruthless plantation owner Edwin Epps (Michael Fassbender). His life changes completely when he meets the Canadian abolitionist Samuel Bass (Brad Pitt). The movie is directed by Steve McQueen with screenplay by John Ridley.
The work of the director and screenplay writer of 12 Years a Slave can be described as bold and absolutely brilliant. They manage to give an accurate picture of the horror of slavery. They draw a clear contrast between the beauty and simplicity of free life and the almost surrealistic world of oppression and exploitation in which every man is deprived of his dignity and identity. They dare to tell the truth without sparing the ugly details, which can literally make any person feel ashamed about the atrocities that we, humans, are capable of.
The movie is strong, involving and deeply emotional. You can really put yourself in Solomon Northup’s shoes. He opposes slavery just like any of us would – as a free man who is willing to do anything to reunite with his family and get his life back. This is what makes the story deeply touching. This movie can really make you think about life, sympathy and the rights that we all have.
The performance of Chiwetel Ejiofor is stunning. It can be safely said that it is the best in his career so far. He goes through all the emotional states that a human possibly can and portrays each nuance naturally and in a deeply touching way. The rest of the cast does a superb job as well. Michael Fassbender is certainly the cruelest and most vicious slave owner you have seen.
12 Years a Slave has high chances of becoming one of the best movies of all time. You should certainly go see it.
