|In the fall of 2013 Jackass presents Bad Grandpa. This is the fourth movie created by the stars of the popular MTV reality series. The first three features were highly rated by fans of the TV show and not only. The question is whether we can expect comedy in its purest form in the new feature too.
Unlike its predecessors, Bad Grandpa has a loose plot even though the main focus is still on the hidden camera pranks and stunts. The movie is directed by Jeff Tremaine. He is also among the screenwriters along with Johnny Knoxville and Spike Jones. The movie tells the story of the 86-year-old Irving Zisman, played by Knoxville, who has to take his 8-year-old grandson Billy (Jackson Nicoll) on a road trip across the United States. On their way, they meet numerous unsuspected citizens whose natural reactions to the crazy things that go on around them are captured on camera.
Bad Grandpa certainly does not have a plot which is worth your attention. However, the pranks are totally crazy and super hilarious. It is true that they go a bit over the top and may seem rude and possibly even offensive to some, but this exaggeration is all part of the fun. The reality is that we have not seen any good traditional comedies lately so this may well be the alternative. Besides, we have to admit that this and the rest of the Jackass movies dear to present things from a viewpoint that many people have but often do not dare to admit.
If you are not uncomfortable with seeing a child beauty pageant participant taking over the stage with a stripper act, then you will certainly have a good time with this movie. There are lots of other provocative moments such as the meeting between grandfather and grandson and a bunch of male strippers. The reactions of the people captured on camera are more than funny. Some may seem a bit unrealistic, but you cannot expect to have reality movie making in full swing when you have such huge provocations.
When it comes to performances, Johnny Knoxville is brilliant in Bad Grandpa. He probably plays his best role ever, even though some of his hardcore fans may need a bit of time to get used to seeing him as an 86-year-old man. Jackson Nicoll is great too. He does an excellent job in playing a sweet and innocent kid who is always ready to make mischief with his much loved grandpa.
If you like Jackass, you will love watching Bad Grandpa.
