|With renowned director Paul Greengrass behind the camera and Tom Hanks playing the lead role, Captain Philips, released in October 2013, promises to be a big hit. It is a biopic which shows the harsh reality as it is. The question is whether you should pay to watch this movie or go for the fictional dramas that have lost some of their appeal in recent years.
Captain Philips is a classic thriller movie. It tells the story of the captain of the container ship Maersk Alabama, Richard Philips, who was taken hostage by Somali Pirates in 2009. The screenplay is by Billy Ray who has based it on the book written by Philips himself. It recreates the memories of the captain without much fiction being added. This is actually one of the great dignities of the movie. You can really be moved and shaken from within knowing that this has happened to a real person not so long ago.
The movie tells the ordeal of the captain in great detail. We see the departure of the ship from Oman and the worries of the captain that something wrong may happen. There is a brief touch on his personal life with a deeply emotional and thoughtful scene between Philips and his wife played by Catherine Keener.
We are briefly introduced to the pirates, but their leader Muse (Barkhad Abdi) turns out to be a fabulous antipode to the main character. There is a great focus on the crew’s fight against the pirates while the hostage situation is full of intensity and dramatic episodes. You can literally feel the heat, the pressure and the fear of the unknown.
The performance of Tom Hanks as watch Captain Philips online has the usual high quality that we expect to see. He certainly puts a lot of himself in the character, but we can clearly see what is going on in the captain’s mind. We can really see the deep and intense emotions behind the protagonist’s calm face. The debuting actor Barkhad Abdi, who was born in Somalia and later immigrated to the US, does an excellent job in playing a man who has been oppressed throughout his whole life and now plays the opposite part.
It has become evident in recent years that the movie industry does not produce good-quality fictional drama. This is one of the reasons why producers and directors have started looking into real-life drama to represent onto the big screen. With Captain Philips they have done a great job. The movie tells the story of the captain honestly and focuses on the drama of the average person being but in an unusual situation.
