|In 79 A.D., the prosperous city of Pompeii situated in Campania region in Italy was covered by 13 to 20 ft of ashes and pumice during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. This historical fact inspired the production of the feature film Pompeii (2014). According to the press, it is one of the most anticipated screenings of the year alongside “Noah” and “Godzilla”. The movie is directed by Paul.W.S. Anderson who is well known for the Resident Evil franchise and the 2011 remake of “The Three Musketeers”.
According to the synopsis, this the story of gladiator Milo’s love for a wealthy merchant’s daughter named Cassia and their struggles to reunite while Mount Vesuvius is about to erupt, thus sending the city into oblivion. The lead character is played by Kit Harrington who gained audience acclaim for the role Jon Snow in the HBO successful series Game of Thrones. Emily Browning plays his love interest. Before this, she starred in “Lemony Snicket’s A series of Unfortunate Events” , “Sucker Punch” and “Sleeping Beauty”. Her character Cassia is forced to marry corrupt Senator Corvis from Rome played by Kiefer Sutherland. Watch Pompeii online and follow the hero as he tries to reach to his love before the eruption engulfs the whole city.
Also joining the cast, Carrie Ann Moss plays Aurelia, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje is Atticus, Jared Harris as Lucretius and Jessica Lucas is Ariadne.
As the movie takes place in a Roman city setting, there are many scenes showing gladiator fights and chariot racing which were a popular form of entertainment at the time despite the brutality. In the arena, Milo the slave is invincible, but the only hope he can have is to die honorably at the hands of his next opponent. When he meets Cassia and falls in love with her, he is determined to runaway with her. In a very ironic way, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius gives him the opportunity of a lifetime, but, still, he is aware that their reunion will be brief. The movie was shot at Cinespace Film Studios in Ontario, Canada and at the original Pompeii site in Italy for a total duration of four months. As the trailer and the wallpapers show, much attention was given to historical details. In the beginning of the trailer you can see the perfectly preserved human corpses. They can be found in reality in the current city of Pompeii which has been declared UNESCO World Heritage Site. During excavations, archaeologists discovered human bodies and different objects preserved very well due to lack of air and moisture as the ashes and pumice adhered to the surface.
An equal amount of attention was given to costumes and special effects recreating the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The bursts of lava and ash were designed in a realistic manner, helping to increase the tension of the movie. Watch Pompeii stream to see the exciting special effects.
