|The opinions on Runner Runner are divided, to say the least. Some find it to be a super entertaining thriller while others think that it is just the latest Hollywood movie that has nothing really special to offer. If you consider watching it but you haven’t made up your mind yet, you should certainly find out more to decide.
Runner Runner tells the story of the poor graduate student Richie Furst (Justin Timberlake) who is swindled by an underground gambling tycoon Ivan Block (Ben Affleck). Richie goes after him and gets a lucrative job offer that he cannot refuse. At the same time, the FBI tries to recruit him in order to capture Ivan. Richie runs for his life trying to escape the two evils. There is a girl, of course, – Rebecca Shafran (Gemma Arterton). The movie is directed by Brad Furman with screenplay by Brian Koppelman and David Levien.
The plot of Runner Runner is intriguing even though it is not a masterpiece, as you can expect. The dialogue is smart even though the characters’ biography details are a bit too much. The action is fast-paced and there are a lot of unexpected twists and turns. There is great intensity especially in the drama of the young gambler who cannot get rid of its addiction no matter what. You will get a good taste of the paradise misadventure nuances in the movie as the drama develops with gorgeous exotic settings in the backdrop.
This movie does a superb job in revealing the corrupt world of gambling and the drama of its victims. There is the luxury facade, of course, which is quite realistic. There is a great contrast between the drama and the setting and this is one of the dignities of the movie. The love story is certainly not its strongest parts, even though the hero naturally gets his muse.
The performance of Justin Timberlake in Runner Runner is quite good. It cannot be said that he shines in the role, but his character is young and likeable and he certainly makes it easy to sympathize with him. Ben Affleck will certainly not disappoint his fans and his critic for that matter. He does a brilliant job in brining a self-made rich man’s character to life. One of the most impressive things about his performance is the emotional maturity which he gives to the character. Gemma Arterton might have done better. She is beautiful, but she does not seem to be right for the role.
You should definitely see Runner Runner if you want to watch a sleek thriller and have some time to waste.
