|There is one thing about The Counselor that can be said with certainty – it is loaded with expectations. Every one expects brilliant performance from the star cast, intriguing and clever screenplay Cormac McCarthy and excellent work from director Ridley Scott. Will you get all this when you take your seat in the movie theatre or at home? Let’s find out.
The Counselor tells the story of a lawyer (Michael Fassbender) who is lured into drug trade by a promise for earning big money. The deal he is involved in quickly turns into a mess that he struggles to get out of. In addition to Fassbender, you will see a plethora of Hollywood stars including Brad Pitt, Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Cameron Diaz.
There is one thing which is undeniable – the screenplay is superb and offers a lot of action, intensity and depth as well as clever lines and funny moments to lighten the mood. Of course, there is violence in The Counselor but it is not the main focus of the movie. There are some crazy scenes which some would appreciate while others wouldn’t but it is all a matter of personal taste really. In any case, you will not get bored even for a second. This movie has everything in it from action and drama to comedy.
The dialogue is free-flowing and fast-paced. It feels great to watch the interaction between characters that seem to come from completely different worlds. It is true that there are some cheesy lines and a few clichés, but there is hardly any screenwriter that can escape from them even if he is seen as the brightest shooting start on the horizon. Generally, these somewhat uncomfortable moments will not spoil the good impression that you will get from the movie.
Michael Fassbender offers a great performance as The Counselor. He really looks as a man who is constantly on the edge of losing his mind while doing everything to avoid losing his life. It is interesting to see the transformations that he is going through. Critics say that both Fassbender and Brad Pitt can expect Oscar nominations for their performances in the movie.
You will certainly enjoy the performance of Penelope Cruz, although she deviates a bit from the typical characters that she plays. We see her in a much more mature but still very sexy role. Javier Bardem is amazing and will certainly surprise even some of his hardcore fans. Despite the low expectations, Cameron Diaz is surprisingly good too.
The Counselor is certainly a great movie, even though it may not match everyone’s taste.
