The Fifth Estate (2013) Movie Poster Even though there are a lot of intriguing movies in the fall of 2013, The Fifth Estate is the most widely discussed in the media. This is not surprising given that it tells the story of WikiLeaks and Julian Assange, played by British actor Benedict Cumberbatch. The group behind the website revealing state secrets has already issued a formal statement criticizing virtually every point in the movie and accusing it of complete falsehood.

The Fifth Estate is with screenplay written by Josh Singer and based on the book of the former spokesperson of WikiLeaks Daniel Domscheit-Berg and on a book about the group written by journalists David Leigh and Luke Harding. The movie tells the story or Assange and Berg, played by Daniel Brühl, who team up to create a totally free media platform which allows everyone wanting to reveal the dark secrets of governments and big corporations to do it efficiently and safely. They see the growth of their organization into a media influencing the entire world, but the real drama comes when the duo faces a moral dilemma on whether to make top secrets of the US government public.

There is no doubt that The Fifth Estate asks some of the most important questions of our time concerning media and their freedom and the policies of governments which are often not in the best interest of the people. It tells a lot about Assange and his character and about his organization as well. Given the fierce response from his group, it seems logical to conclude that the movie touches upon some sensitive issues to the leader of WikiLeaks.

The movie scores well in terms of artistic quality as well. The plot is intriguing while the action is fast-paced. There are elegant touches of suspense and drama which will certainly keep you glued to your seat. Director Bill Condon has certainly done a great job.

The performance of Benedict Cumberbatch as Julian Assange is excellent to say the least. He has managed to recreate the tone, expressions and the body language of Assange perfectly. The physical resemblance between the two is amazing and this helps the movie to achieve great realism. We can really feel the drama and the intense emotions that the character is going through. The rest of the cast including Daniel Brühl, Laura Linney, Dan Stevens, Carice van Houten and Stanley Tucci offers super performance as well.

If you want to watch The Fifth Estate online that poses some serious questions about modern society, media and freedom, you should certainly go see The Fifth Estate. It is provocative as well as entertaining and this is what true art is all about.
